As the weather cools down, people tend to spend more time indoors. This is the best time to create a cozy and comfortable environment to sustain you through the holiday season and straight into the colder months.

Lawyer Warmth Throughout Your Home

Every season is a new opportunity to decorate your home. In the winter, a safe and cozy environment is sensible. Try to add layers of warmth, such as soft throws draped over the furniture, plush rugs for the floor or even sheepskin for your chairs. Not only can these pieces of décor make your home warmer and more comfortable, but they give your home a beautiful, wintery aesthetic.

There are many ways to create a more energy efficient kitchen, but few changes will make a bigger impact than addressing your major appliances. If your refrigerator, dishwasher or oven are more than 10 years old or aren’t energy star certified, it may be time for an upgrade. Older appliances may not run efficiently, wasting more energy in order to function day-to-day. While there is an initial investment cost, the savings over time on water and electricity can be significant. You’ll also give your kitchen a sleek new look with beautiful and modern upgrades. However, don’t stop with just purchasing a new item; make sure you maintain it and keep it clean. A well-cared-for appliance will last longer and perform more efficiently, so follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for regular maintenance.

It sounded like a good idea at the time, right? Move the moist bathroom air into the attic and it will simply flow out through the vents. Why go to all the trouble of venting the air all the way outdoors?

What you may not have thought about is that when warm moist bathroom air encounters cooler attic air, the moisture condenses on exposed surfaces. In places where winter weather brings snow and ice, you can expect the moisture to condense and accumulate as ice. After a long cold winter, the accumulated ice will thaw all at once.

Avoid venting any type of moist air into the attic. Proper ventilation is key to keeping your home dry and healthy.

In winter, many people seek the indoors for warmth and coziness, so bring both function and aesthetics to your home with bold textures! Knitted blankets and even sweaters can break apart plain designs and give something comfortable to cuddle up with. Materials with sheen or brightness give a pop to any part of a room, whether it’s a colorful velvet or neutral metallic. Soft faux fur is wonderful to touch and a fun addition to a smooth surface. Rough or ruffled accents work too. Consider using imitation leaves or tinsel to add something different and rich to the senses. Get creative and try to add one or two unique textures to any room!

We all love our water heaters because without them we couldn’t enjoy a hot shower or the ease of clean dishes and clean clothes thanks to modern appliances. Water heaters are responsible for keeping hot water ready for our use. If your water heater uses gas, such as propane or natural gas, it will require venting. Properly working vents are important to keep the air in our homes safe.

It is important to regularly check your water heater for what is called backdrafting. Look for things like condensation, corrosion or moist warm air escaping from the draft hood. If the vent is experiencing back drafting it can bring dangerous gases like carbon monoxide into the home, so keep an eye on things. Using a CO2 detector is also a great way to monitor the surrounding air or you can have the water heater inspected.

Tis the season, and Christmas trees are everywhere. You need not live with needles falling everywhere, because real trees should last for more than one month. Here are three tips to keep your Christmas tree fresh during your festivities.

Trim the Trunk

When you bring your tree home, trim at least one inch off the bottom of the trunk. If you do not put it up right away, store it in a bucket of water, protected from severe weather. Once ready to set it up, trim another inch off the trunk before putting it in a sizable stand that holds about one gallon of water.

Mind the Heat

Keep your tree well away from heaters and fireplaces. These heat sources dry it out much faster.

Stay Hydrated

Just like you, your tree likes hydration. Check the water level in the stand regularly and freshen Christmas tree by watering it when needed.
Christmas trees are festive and joyful, but they can easily dry out. You can prolong your tree’s life by taking a few simple steps. Now you need not fear the Grinch.

The garage often becomes a neglected space full of extra items from the house and cluttered with toys and tools. Often parking in the garage takes a backseat to the excess and disorganization of the space. Whether you have a single, double or triple, take back your garage with a few easy tips.

Store Together Like Items

Storing items together that are similar in use or nature can save you time and money. For one thing, you won’t be searching high and low for that one screwdriver you need. Another benefit is you know exactly what you have and don’t have. Not buying items you already own saves you both money and time. Place a label on any boxes and bins stored in your garage so you know exactly what they contain. Like items can then be placed where they belong instead of randomly set down.

Toss Out and Give Away the Excess

Some of the items tossed in the garage are better suited for the trash or recycling bins. Broken tools, worn out toys and actual trash often litter the floors and boxes in a garage. Clearing out the trash eases up space and makes sorting through the good stuff easier. Another way to get rid of some of the excess in your garage is to donate items you no longer use but are still in good shape. Or have a garage sale and use any money made to purchase garage storage items.

Take Advantage of Wall Space

Whether you place some cabinets, hooks or both, walls offer an easy way to access and store tools, toys and equipment. Cabinets hung on the wall can store items such as spray paints, oils and shop towels. Hooks placed on the wall let you store some of your tools within easy reach. Open shelves easily store labeled boxes and bins where they are easy to access. A tool chest pushed against the wall makes it easy to access without cluttering the floor.

Organizing your garage doesn’t have to be a daunting task. In fact, once you spend a little time organizing the space, you can resume parking your car in there, creating a workshop and finding all your stored items with ease.

One way to alleviate persistent allergies is to look high and low for accumulated dirt and dust that may irritate your airways. Where should you start? One area that often gets overlooked during your regular cleaning is ceiling fans.

Beautiful ceiling fans add beauty to a room’s decor and create air circulation, but they also have a flat surface where dust and dander can settle. Fortunately, cleaning fan blades is one of the easiest home maintenance tasks around. Just make sure to turn the fan off first.

If you have a hard time reaching your fan, use a step ladder. A quick trick for cleaning the blades is to use a pillow case. Slide the pillowcase over the blade and gently pull it forward. All the dust should be contained in the pillowcase. If some dust remains, grab a moist rag to clean what is left.

Sleep peacefully all night long knowing your ceiling fan is spic and span.

When the weather turns cooler, it’s time to turn up the heat to keep your home cozy. Part of your fall home maintenance checklist should include checking doors and windows for drafts.

Finding the Fix

If you can see cracks of light or feel air moving, it only takes a moment to fix. By applying some simple weather stripping or adding insulated draft stoppers to your exterior doors, you can save plenty of money by heating your home more efficiently and keeping the cold air out. You can apply a more secure but ultimately temporary seal to windows since you won’t need to open them during the colder seasons. This removable weatherstripping can easily be peeled off once spring returns with warmer weather.
